India clinched the gold medal in the men’s cricket event at the Asian Games by defeating Pakistan with a 19-run victory in a thrilling final held at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. This victory marks India’s successful defense of their title, extending their dominance over Pakistan in T20 internationals.
Batting first, India set a formidable target of 212 runs, finishing at 211/6. The innings was powered by a quick start from Abhishek Sharma, who scored a rapid half-century, propelling India to their highest Powerplay score of 81/2 against Pakistan in T20Is. However, Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, staged a comeback by taking crucial wickets during the middle overs to slow India’s momentum.
Tilak Varma delivered a game-changing performance in the latter part of the innings, remaining unbeaten at 51 off 22 balls. His 62-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who added 27 runs, was instrumental in pushing India past the 200-run mark, presenting Pakistan with a challenging chase.
In response, Pakistan put up a strong fight with Hasan Nawaz anchoring the chase. Nawaz scored an unbeaten 96 from 51 balls and formed an 87-run partnership with Saim Ayub, creating pressure on the Indian bowling attack. Nevertheless, India’s bowlers regained control in the crucial overs. Washington Sundar’s excellent 18th over and Jasprit Bumrah’s tight penultimate over were pivotal in restraining Pakistan’s run flow.
Needing 33 runs in the final over, Pakistan fell short as India maintained composure, with Shivam Dube successfully defending the last over. The win secured another Asian Games gold medal for the Indian team, highlighting their continued prowess in T20 cricket.
