This strategic initiative is aimed at enhancing supply chain efficiency, cutting transportation costs, and fortifying trade ties between the UAE, Oman, and the broader regional markets. The corridor links Sharjah with Oman’s key ports, including Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, passing through the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. Authorities are optimistic that transit times will decrease further as operations mature.
To incentivize the use of this new corridor, Sharjah has introduced toll exemptions for cargo trucks traversing the approved routes from Oman. This initiative is complemented by expedited customs clearance, streamlined movement of goods, and the flexibility for businesses to complete customs procedures at inland container terminals rather than at border crossings. Officials project that these measures could lead to a reduction in logistics costs by approximately 15%, contingent on the type of cargo and specific transportation needs.
The corridor’s inception on May 14 has marked a new chapter in facilitating bidirectional cargo movement, supported by coordinated customs procedures, real-time data sharing, and exclusive fast-track shipment lanes. These enhancements are particularly advantageous for manufacturers, expediting the flow of raw materials and finished goods. The improved logistics route is set to bolster Sharjah’s standing as a regional logistics and manufacturing hub, with its more than 3,000 factories contributing about a quarter of the emirate’s GDP.
Sharjah’s strategy of reinforcing its role as a pivotal logistics center aims to boost exports and draw international investors seeking access to markets in Africa, India, and Asia. The corridor not only strengthens the trade infrastructure but also aligns with the emirate’s broader economic objectives.
