Gulf States on Alert as Iran Strikes Kuwait Airport and Backs Hezbollah Plot

by admin477351

Kuwait became a fresh front in the expanding conflict on Wednesday when Iran launched a drone attack that caused a major fire at Kuwait International Airport. Simultaneously, Kuwaiti authorities announced the arrest of six individuals over an alleged Hezbollah plot to assassinate senior Gulf state leaders. The incidents illustrated how the US-Iran war was pulling multiple countries into its orbit, threatening the stability of the wider region.

Kuwait’s interior ministry said five of those arrested were Kuwaiti citizens, while an additional 14 suspected members of the group had fled the country. The group was said to have included Kuwaiti nationals, Iranians, and Lebanese individuals. The alleged assassination plot reflected a pattern of Iranian-backed activity throughout the Gulf aimed at pressuring Arab states to distance themselves from the US-led war effort.

Iran launched simultaneous attacks on multiple Gulf targets while continuing its missile campaign against Israel. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting at least eight Iranian drones in its eastern oil-producing region. The attacks demonstrated that despite suffering massive losses in infrastructure and naval capacity, Iran retained the ability to project force across the region. US military commanders confirmed that while they had degraded Iran’s capabilities significantly, “we’re not done yet.”

The broader diplomatic picture remained deeply fractured. Iran rejected the US ceasefire proposal and submitted its own counter-demands, while Trump insisted a deal was possible. Chinese, Egyptian, Pakistani, and Turkish intermediaries urged dialogue and expressed hope that direct talks could begin soon. But with Iran simultaneously conducting attacks and dismissing negotiations, the prospects for an early breakthrough appeared limited.

Israel continued its relentless aerial campaign, striking targets across Iran and pressing its ground offensive against Hezbollah south of the Litani River in Lebanon. Iranian officials insisted that any ceasefire must include Lebanon, linking a halt to the broader conflict with an end to Israeli operations against Hezbollah. The UN chief called on Israel to halt its operations in Lebanon and urged both sides in the Hezbollah conflict to stop fighting, raising the spectre of the Gaza model spreading northward.
