The process of creating a username is straightforward. Users can select a distinctive handle within the app, and only those who know this username can make contact, as phone numbers remain hidden. In cases where a desired username is already in use, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions using a built-in generator. An essential aspect of the privacy design is the absence of a public directory for usernames, ensuring that users cannot be easily searched by strangers.
To reserve a username, users need to update their app and navigate to Settings → Account → Username. Due to WhatsApp’s extensive user base, early reservations are being encouraged to manage the high demand for popular usernames. Notifications will alert users when the feature becomes available in their respective regions.
The new system also includes an additional privacy measure: an optional “username key.” This feature adds a second layer of security, allowing users to selectively share this key to control who can initiate conversations with them.
