Iran has issued a warning that it may suspend peace negotiations with the United States, citing Israel’s actions in Lebanon as a violation of the existing ceasefire agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the ceasefire agreement encompasses all areas, including Lebanon, and any breach would be seen as a violation of the entire accord. Tehran has made it clear that both Israel and the United States would be held accountable for any repercussions stemming from renewed hostilities in the region.
Reacting to Iran’s stance, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that the U.S. had not yet been officially notified of Iran’s decision to pause the talks. However, he noted that a temporary halt in negotiations might be acceptable. Trump assured that the U.S. would keep its blockade on Iranian ports intact while avoiding any immediate military escalation.
In efforts to uphold the ceasefire, Trump engaged in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and intermediaries associated with Hezbollah. Subsequently, Lebanon confirmed that both Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to mutually cease attacks, including strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Despite this, Netanyahu issued a stern warning that Israel would continue to target Hezbollah if attacks on Israeli civilians persisted.
Tensions escalated when Israel issued evacuation alerts for certain areas of Beirut. In response, Iran cautioned that any significant Israeli assault on the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs would provoke retaliatory strikes against Israeli targets. Iranian officials also accused the U.S. of not honoring ceasefire commitments, pointing to ongoing economic pressure and military activities.
