Following a key meeting with US President Donald Trump, Ukraine is moving swiftly to implement a new weapons purchase agreement, President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced. A Ukrainian delegation is preparing for an imminent trip to the United States to begin the technical work required to turn the high-level political agreement into a reality.
The meetings, scheduled for the end of this month or early October, will focus on the “practical implementation” of the deal. The primary goal for Ukraine is to secure long-range weapons, a capability it has long sought to enhance its ability to strike critical targets deep behind enemy lines. This new deal will supplement an already massive $90 billion aid framework.
The urgency of this implementation reflects Kyiv’s strategic priorities. While its own drone program has achieved notable successes, acquiring dedicated US-made long-range missile systems is seen as a crucial next step to gain a decisive advantage in the ongoing conflict.
The implementation talks will also cover a novel aspect of the partnership: the potential US purchase of Ukrainian drones. Zelensky confirmed that technical teams from both countries will start working on the details of such a sale, marking a significant step towards a more balanced, collaborative defense relationship.
As these plans for future capabilities are put into motion, Ukraine’s current defensive posture is also being strengthened. Zelensky noted the recent arrival of a US-made Patriot air defense system from Israel, a significant asset for protecting Ukrainian cities. Two more systems are expected in the fall, providing a stronger shield as Ukraine works to acquire a longer spear.
