A US official has poured cold water on President Trump’s plans for a Budapest summit with Vladimir Putin. The official, speaking anonymously, said Tuesday there are “no plans” for a meeting in the “immediate future.”
This comes just days after Trump hailed a “progress” call with Putin and announced on social media that the two would meet within two weeks.
The Kremlin backed up the US official’s statement, with a spokesperson saying there is “no precise timeframe” for any summit.
In an effort to organize the meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a “productive” call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday.
However, the US official indicated this call was the end of the planning for now, stating an in-person follow-up was “not necessary.” This is the latest “abrupt shift” by Trump, who has boasted of his “personal chemistry” with Putin.
