Iran has raised allegations against Qatar, accusing the Gulf nation of hindering its attempts to investigate the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amid a recent conflict. Qatar has refuted these claims, firmly denying any involvement in detaining the pilots. Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an official within the Iranian armed forces, revealed that an Iranian Air Force expert team has been waiting for months to gain permission to travel to Qatar to examine the situation. He pressed Doha to facilitate the team’s visit and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to pursue the issue further.
Previously, Iran announced it had recovered the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who died in an attack involving the US Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, categorically denied the accusations of detaining Iranian pilots. Al-Ansari explained that after the pilots allegedly breached Qatari airspace, Qatar had attempted to communicate with them, and when no response was received, defensive measures were taken.
Qatar stated that its search and rescue teams were deployed to locate the pilots, and it coordinated with Iran on the transfer of the remains of the one pilot who was found. Additionally, Doha noted that Iranian authorities were invited back in April to dispatch a team to Qatar for a briefing on the search and rescue efforts, but no response had been received from Iran.
This dispute unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional countries following the conflict that erupted earlier this year. Amid these strained relations, Qatar has been instrumental in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions and facilitating dialogue between the involved parties.
